Educational Community
We knew that the brick-and-mortar facilities of our public schools, traditionally community centers were a great venue to present validated prevention and nonnarcotic treatment options. Not only that they provide an opportunity to get to our citizens as early as possible in their lives for prevention, but also reactive treatment as soon as possible. We knew that most people aren’t alcoholics or addicts, and therefore we should take that model and promote it to as many people as possible. By presenting it in the local schoolhouse we are not only reaching citizens as early as possible, but we are also teaching their instructors new techniques and protocols so that those professionals can increase the breadth of our outreach.
Legal Community
We also knew that combining, the legal problems associated with substance use disorder, with the medical problems, not only provided a way to enforce and mandate treatment options that worked, but also began the process of emptying overcrowded prisons. To be sure threats to society need to remain incarcerated, but it was no secret that although America was home to only 5% of the world’s population, America was, also home to 25% of the world’s prison population. Simply stated too many people were incarcerated for health reasons as a misguided earlier attempt on the war on drugs. Connecting legal and medical eventually saw the happenstance of both of those problems become the solution to both of those problems for the individual.
Medical Community
We also knew that connecting the educators also meant professional direction for collaborating professionals on other community problems. As laudable as it was to create a society of, like-minded, solution oriented, multidiscipline, professional collaborators we exponentially multiplied challenges for functioning. Many of the most gifted professionals, had never worked in a team situation before, and the educators not only created one of the three essential pillars, but became the mortar to hold the other professional applications together. Professional educators would not only teach technological group functionality, but also become the conductors of all three professions.
